BKA Basic Assessment 2024
We are planning to run the Basic Assessment course again this year. It is the first of the practical assessments.
The Basic Assessment syllabus can appear daunting at first glance, but it is a list of the basic things which all beekeepers should know. To take the Basic Assessment you should have managed at least one colony of bees for a minimum of 12 months.
We are planning to run a Basic Assessment course starting in April 2024 and finishing with the practical assessment in June. The course consists of 4 x taught sessions and 2 x practical sessions & a mock assessment.
The course
Introduction. Tuesday, 9th April, 7.30-8.30. All theory sessions will be held by zoom.
Outline of the course & the assessment, syllabus, provisional dates for practical sessions & the assessment, payment of fees and exam entry. This is a chance to find out more about the course & the assessment before you pay.
Session 1 – Natural History. Tuesday, 30th April, 7.30-9.00
Session 2 – Swarming. Tuesday, 7th May, 7.30-9.00.

Practical sessions x2 . These will be held at the Joe Birkby Teaching Apiary, Myerscough College. The sessions will be held in June but will be weather & bee dependent. We will discuss the dates and your availability for these sessions on 9th April. They are provisionally booked for Saturday 1st & Saturday 29th June or Tuesday 4th & Tuesday 18th June
Mock assessment: Saturday, 15th June, or Thursday 20th June, 1pm
