Keeping Healthy Colonies
In October, former BBKA President, Margaret Murdin, gave an insightful and interesting talk on keeping our bee colonies healthy. You can view the slides she used here. Keeping healthy colonies
BKA Basic Assessment 2025
The Basic Assessment syllabus can appear daunting at first glance, but it is a list of the basic things which all beekeepers should know. To take the Basic Assessment you should have managed at least one colony of bees for a minimum of 12 months.
We are planning to run a Basic Assessment course starting in May 2025 and finishing with the practical assessment at the beginning of July. The course consists of 5 sessions (zoom) and 2 x practical sessions & a mock assessment. All theory sessions will be held by zoom.
BASIC ASSESSMENT
The course
Session 1 – Introduction. Wednesday,30th April, 7.00-8.00.
This is a short session to discuss the syllabus & the course but mainly to sort out the dates for the practical sessions & the actual assessment. This is a chance to ask any questions you have about the course or the assessment before you pay the fees.
Session 2 – Natural History. Wednesday, 7th May, 7.00-8.30pm
Session 3 – Swarming. Wednesday, 14th May, 7.00-8.30pm
Session 4 – Bee Health. Wednesday, 21st May, 7.00-8.30pm
Session 5 – Beekeeping Knowledge. Wednesday, 28th May, 7.00-8.30pm
Practical sessions. These will be held at the Teaching Apiary. The practical sessions will be held at the beginning of June and the mock assessment at the end of June, but they will be weather & bee dependent.
Assessment: Will probably be at the beginning of July – we will discuss this and check your availability on 30th April.
