The Joe Birkby Teaching Apiary
Preston BKA’s Teaching Apiary has been in operation for over 10 years. It usually supports 10 to 12 hives of bees, which are inspected on Saturday mornings by a team of experienced beekeepers, working with the our beginners. This allows new and prospective beekeepers to try their hand with the bees, before they make the leap and become beekeepers themselves.
The Apiary is also used for courses for other members of the club, and is the venue for Practical Assessments .
All the work at the apiary, both teaching the beginners and all the maintenance work is done by club members on a voluntary basis. If you would like to join the team in any capacity, please contact the Club Secretary.
Please remember to bring protective clothing when attending the apiary.
Apiary sessions over Autumn and Winter
From the beginning of October visits to the Apiary switch to winter mode, with no inspections, but a quick apiary check on the first Saturday of each month at 11am and a chat in the café afterwards.
The Maintenance Crew will continue to meet on Thursday mornings.
