Latest updates from Preston & District Beekeepers

The results are in!
6 members entered as individuals and we submitted 2 club entries this year.
The Club display was 5th in the Shop window class. Unfortunately 6 jars of apiary honey were unplaced in the Apiary honey class.
Jan Blanthorn Hazel gained a 1st with her Almond tray bake .
Siuna Reid took 3rd prize for her Microscope slide and 4th with a Set of Digital images.
Simon Cordingley won 3rd prize with his video and 5th prize in the Colour Print class
Elaine Hargreaves gained 3rd prize in Sweets/chocolates, 4th in Medium Honey and 4th with her Beeswax cake.
Liane Doree won 1st prize with her Honeycomb design, 1st with a Limerick, 3rd with Honey Marmalade, 4th in the Wax wrap class and 5th with her Product display of 10 items.
Tracy Ragdale a very new member who won a Blue Ribbon at Lancashire County show, submitted 3 exhibits.
These are fabulous results from a very few PBKA members. To gain any award at the National Honey Show is a great achievement, last year there were 2,412 entries! Some are International and the standard is very high.
Northern BKs are poorly represented so please consider entering next year. We’ll be needing honey, wax and candles from multiple members for the shop display. The show is an interesting and enjoyable experience with many lectures and workshops too.
Very well done to those who took the time to represent the PBKA and to prove our members can produce show entries to compete at the top level.
Preston & District Beekeepers Honey Show 2024
Congratulations to all those who received an award, prize or a trophy at our 2024 Honey Show which was held on Saturday 21st September at Samlesbury War Memorial Hall, Preston.
Our Judge was John Goodwin from Cheshire, with Elaine Hargreaves from Lancashire Stewarding.
Our Speaker was John Charlton also from Cheshire who talked about Products of the Hive, including Mead, whilst judging was underway.
Exhibits were entered into every one of the 23 classes including the new classes on the Schedule which was encouraging. Our Judge John Goodwin complemented exhibitors on the standard of their exhibits, whilst explaining that he was not able to make awards in every class. We all learnt from his advice of the improvement opportunities for exhibiting at future shows.
As there were 128 exhibits including those in the Blacked Out Jar Class at the PBKA Honey Show, the judge John Goodwin was able to present a Blue Ribbon Award for the Best Exhibit in the Show which is only given when there are over 100 exhibits.
The Blue Ribbon was awarded to Alan Manwaring for the winning Medium Honey (Class 2) which was deemed the Best Exhibit in the Show gaining the A.J. Fisher Trophy. Alan also achieved The Most Points in the Show receiving the Andrew Todd Trophy. Well done Alan for setting such a high benchmark for us all to aim for.
Another prestigious award never presented at our show before was awarded to Tracy Ragsdale for the best exhibit in Class 6b: Novice Honey. The new handmade wood-turned trophy was presented to Tracy along with a Certificate which allows her to exhibit at the 2024 National Honey Show at Sandown Park, at the end of October. An honour indeed.
Winner of Class 6a: Beginner’s Honey, was Iain Shaw, who received The Joe Birkby Memorial Trophy.
The Best Wax Exhibit in Show, was the Wax Cake : Class 9 produced and exhibited by Emma Langrish who won the PBKA Shield
A Certificate of Merit (not received at our show previously) was presented for the best Frame of Honeycomb (Class 7) exhibit by Jan Blanthorn-Hazel.
One of our junior exhibitors, Lola Cuthbertson won a Special Certificate for her beautiful artwork in Class 18: A Craft Item.
The prize for the honey judged by public tasting in Class 20: A Blacked Out Jar, which is assessed on taste and aroma alone, was awarded to Simon Cordingley.
The Fastest Frame in Class 21, made to BBKA standards of course, was achieved by Kath Cordingley, who kindly donated the prize of all of the frames to the club.
Well done to all of our trophy and prize winners. A full list of winners in each class and those placed, is attached..
The Honey Show was an great opportunity to have some fun in our friendly competition and to catch up with fellow beekeeping friends old and new.
Thank you to all those who helped out on the day, to those who exhibited & well done to everyone who received an award, prize or a trophy.
You all made our local Honey Show an enjoyable & successful day.

Success at the National Honey Show 2023.
We’d like to pass on the fantastic news that Preston BKA gained 3rd place at the National Honey show in October. The certificate and photos are on our website and will also be on display at the apiary very soon. We also earned £25 in prize money!
The class, especially for the Centenary year was for a shop window display and only groups were eligible to enter. The club staged a Christmas themed exhibit with contributions from 9 of our members. Huge thanks to them for their efforts.
It was a very strong class, with 8 well thought out entries. The judge thought our display was stunning and completely answered the schedule brief. We are very proud of our collective achievement.
In addition, we had some brilliant individual results.
Simon Cordingly gained first place in 2 classes in photography and video.
Jan Blanthorn Hazel won 3rd place for her Heather honey
Elaine Hargreaves was awarded 3rd place for her marmalade
Liane Doree was awarded first place for Sections (winning a trophy) and for wax wraps.
Liane and the committee would like to encourage members to experience the National Honey Show if possible, it’s a fabulous three day event with lectures and workshops too.
